FILMMAKER: HOPE RYDEN
Hope Ryden, filmmaker and photographer, discovered the Lovings’ story in 1965. Working at the time with Robert Drew & Associates, she persuaded Drew that the Lovings’ story was critical. She traveled with cinematographer Abbot Mills to Virginia to document the Lovings and their lawyers at home and in other locations. Shooting in cinema verité style, the work she and Abbot Mills produced has opened up the Lovings’ world to us in 2011. We are grateful to have her valuable footage, which became an essential part of our own telling of The Loving Story. Hope Ryden is recognized as a pioneer woman documentary filmmaker.

PHOTOGRAPHER: GREY VILLET
Free lance photographer Grey Villet was commissioned by LIFE Magazine to create a photo essay on the Lovings. Out of that emerged a wealth of images showing the Lovings and their family in their everyday world. What comes through is the profound love and affection shared between Richard and Mildred and their children. We are grateful to Grey Villet’s estate and, in particular, to his wife Barbara for the use of these images.
